How Semantic Web Works

How Semantic Web Works – The World Wide Web is an interesting paradox — it’s made with computers but for people. The sites you visit every day use natural language, images and page layout to present information in a way that’s easy for you to understand. Even though they are central to creating and maintaining the Web, the computers themselves really can’t make sense of all this information. They can’t read, see relationships or make decisions like you can.The Semantic Web proposes to help computers “read” and use the Web. The big idea is pretty simple — metadata added to Web pages can make the existing World Wide Web machine readable. This won’t bestow artificial intelligence or make computers self-aware, but it will give machines tools to find, exchange and, to a limited extent, interpret information. It’s an extension of, not a replacement for, the World Wide Web.

Planning a Semantic Web site

This article discusses what you need to know to make your Web site part of the Semantic Web. It starts with a discussion of the problems the Semantic Web tries to solve and then moves to the technologies involved, such as Resource Description Framework (RDF), Web Ontology Language (OWL), and SPARQL Protocol and RDF Query Language (SPARQL). You’ll see how the Semantic Web is layered on top of the existing Web. It then covers some issues that you want to know about when you plan a new Web site and also gives specific examples of how to use technologies like RDFa and Microformats to enable your existing Web site to become a part of the Semantic Web.

html / css tableless templates for free from Mollio

By

Mollio is a simple set of html/css templates. These templates use pure css for layout and design and cover a wide range of layouts ranging from a simple one column layout to multiple columns with sidebars.

Each template has a sample page so you can see exactly what the finished result looks like. If your into CSS for layout and want to move away from tables for your design this is definitely a good place to start. Looking at the code it’s very clean with seperate style sheets for print and viewing, they also take into account all the little nuances with IE6, etc.

All the sample layouts can be downloaded as one zip file: mollio_version1.1.zip currrently running at version 1.1. The templates are released under three different licences: Creative Commons, GPL and CPL which means you can choose the license that suits your needs. These templates are from the author of their main opensource package; FarCry (FarCry CMS is an open source solution and has no associated license fees).

The Machine is Us/ing Us – What is this Web2.0 thing?

By

I’ve been looking at the finished web2.0 video on YouTube titled: “Web 2.0 in just under 5 minutes“. This title caught my eye, and I was not disappointed when I saw the video. Very neat and hits home very quickly what web2.0 and social engineering and interaction is all about.

It has some really good video techniques and shows details very quickly cramming in a lot of information in a very short time frame. Well worth a look if your interested in what’s happening in the web space at the moment.
